|In this highly experiential course, you will be part of a team (usually 4 members) that operates as the top management of an extremely realistic simulated international company. Students can expect to marry concepts and practice in a way that greatly strengthens their understanding of what general managers really do. The teams make strategic and operating decisions using knowledge from multiple disciplines: strategy, marketing, production, economics, organizational development, accounting, and negotiations.
Student management teams deal with challenging and ambiguous issues very much like real world business problems in this simulated world called INTOPIA. Student management teams compete and collaborate with each other, but also interact with alumni run companies operating in the INTOPIA universe. The six or seven alumni companies have been generously volunteering their value-adding efforts for many years, leading to richer learning from a wider range of business models and people.
Readings and cases are intended to parallel experiences in INTOPIA. Additional learning occurs in the final week or two when each company presents its operating history to the class and each individual completes a written assignment.
Students have emphasized the uniqueness of this course in our curriculum.
Two recent students have created a short video describing their learning at https://www.intopia.biz/INTOPIA%20Comments.m4v
Students have commented as follows:
“INTOPIA combined everything I had learned in my prior classes and taught me how to apply it in a ‘real life’ business situation.”
“Having started interviewing for jobs in the middle of the quarter, I find it interesting to note that I often end up discussing my INTOPIA experience to answer questions. I think I have learned a lot of concepts at Chicago Booth, but the INTOPIA framework gives me a way to understand a problem and use my tools to solve it. ”
